Connecticut Orchid Society
Sharon SmithDelisle
The Connecticut Orchid Society is proud to present the first recipient of the Orchid Digest Diamond Award of Excellence to Sharon SmithDelisle. Sharon has been the society’s newsletter editor, corresponding secretary, librarian and historian since 2006. She calls this her “labor of love”-producing, publishing, managing, organizing, storing and protecting the written documentation so important to the society. While Sharon, the orchid grower in the family, is often out front giving orchid growing talks, participating in out-reach programs and intimately involved with the society’s daily function, husband Richard prefers to keep a low profile and quietly going about making things happen in the background. What start out as scribbled ideas on scraps of paper for show displays or special event projects, turn into reality with Richard’s design and construction abilities. Each year as show time draws near, he can be found in the garage performing magic with PVC pipe, lumber, nails, paint, and glue. The complete project is loaded onto the back of his pickup and driven to show site, where Richard pitches in and oversees the build. He enjoys the challenge of making a design idea into reality. COS extends a heartfelt thanks to this hard-working couple who epitomize volunteering.

Wisconsin Orchid Society
Walter Crawford
The Wisconsin Orchid Society is pleased to recognize Walter Crawford for outstanding service to the society. The Orchid Digest Diamond Award of Excellence is a visible way to express our appreciation and to honor him for all his efforts. During this time, he has constructed collapsible staging for our show displays, collected our plants and transported all to regional shows, where he helped set up displays. Afterwards, he has recorded the show awards, helped take down the displays, brought the plants home to be returned to their owners, and then laundered the show linens. He has assisted with our society’s member plant auction for years. As the “resident encyclopedia” for culture, species and hybrids, Walter has been the go-to person. His plants bring great diversity to our meetings and shows. He has served on our Board of Directors and has quietly contributed to the running and betterment of the Wisconsin Orchid Society. We are grateful beneficiaries.

Foothills Orchid Society (Canada)
Bruno and Carol Gert
Bruno, rather than an orchid grower, is a facilitator for orchid growers for both his wife Gert and the Foothills Orchid Society members. A carpenter by trade, Bruno has built display facilities for orchid shows for many years. His creative stands and panels have allowed FOS to display member plants in various theme oriented structures. Whether a Parisian patio, a flower market booth or latticed panels, Bruno has designed, built and assembled them for untold years. After the shows, he dismantles them and stores the components for reuse in many shows like the Calgary Garden Show. Bruno is always there to assist.
Carol has been a member of the Executive Board for many years, fifteen as Executive Secretary. Carol was also secretary for the Canadian Orchid Congress for several years. As secretary, she was consulted for history and protocol. Carol is a keen orchid grower, successfully growing many different varieties, most notably her spectacular disas that almost nobody else grows. Lately, has shown her Fredclarkeara After Dark. Carol and Bruno are always at the forefront of volunteering.
The Foothills Orchid Society is proud to honor Bruno and Carol Gert with the Orchid Digest Diamond Awards of Excellence. We are the grateful recipients of their outstanding work.

Dr. Robert “Bob” Streeter has been a very active member of our society since joining in 1977. He served as President in 1982 and 1983. Bob’s dedication, enthusiasm, and support to the society is unwavering. He’s currently Director Emeritus on our board. Bob is responsible for organizing the judging at all our shows and other local societies’ events and shows.
Bob is very helpful, especially to guests or newer members, answering their questions and attending to their needs; he’s constantly encouraging everyone in the society to participate, volunteer, and help out with the affairs of the society. Since his first orchids (cattleyas) 61 years ago, he has accumulated hundreds of plants. He has enjoyed attending four World Orchid Conferences, has received several CSA and AOS awards, including a FCC/AOS on his Cattleya loddigesii var harrisoniana ‘Streeter’s Choice’ which has also been awarded a Silver Medal at the WOC in Brazil. He served one term on the AOS Outreach Committee and has been hybridizing cymbidiums and cattleyas for several years.
He is a CSA judge and was the CSA award chairman for 20 years. He is now 88 and has said that growing this many orchids would either kill him or keep him alive. Guess the latter is winning. The South Bay Orchid Society is pleased to honor Dr. Bob with great thanks and congratulate him for receiving this much deserved award of “excellence” for all his years of service.

Espie makes herself available to any member who might have questions and has shared her knowledge of growing and cultural care of orchids by speaking to our club for many years. Espie is such an asset to our society, an outstanding member, and just a delightful person. Simply put, it just doesn’t get better than Espie Quinn.

Greater Las Vegas Orchid Society
Carol Siegel
Carol Siegel has been the spark of life for the Greater Las Vegas Orchid Society for almost fifteen years. She is dedicated to providing educational speakers from around North America and a range of delightful experiences, from “Show-and-Tell” to plant sales, orchid culture demonstration to a luxurious raffle. Thanks to the support of our members, we are lucky to have delicious meals at our meetings, too. Carol’s aim is to plan for shopping, food, and entertainment at every meeting. Thanks to her unfailing humor and caring attitude, we walk away with warm smiles.

For many years, she has organized annual field trips to view one of Nevada’s native orchids, Epipactis gigantia, in Red Rock State Park. We have also enjoyed a number of field trips to find other native orchids. Spiranthes infernalis is indigenous to a tiny area of Nevada, Ash Meadows. It was reported, but not documented until our club got involved. With Carol’s guidance, we found specimens and reported it to a biologist at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. The next year, members volunteered to do a census and collect specimen plants to put this rarity on the map. Spiranthes deluvialis was last reported in Nevada in 1929. Again, members of GLVOS got involved, and we “rediscovered” it near a municipal pond, adding a fourteenth native orchid to Nevada’s list.

Carol is a frequent contributor to the Orchid Digest and is a past member of the Board of Directors. Her talents are wide and deep. Our members are very grateful that she applies them to organizing and guiding our club. We wouldn’t be the same without her.

Palomar Orchid Society
Renate Schmidt
The Palomar Orchid Society is honored to present the Orchid Digest Diamond Award of Excellence to Renate Schmidt. Renate has been an active member of our society for over 10 years and has contributed extensively to the organization in numerous ways. She has served as VP of Programs in 2014 as well as in past years, identifying and bringing in several very interesting speakers to further advance the education of our members. She has co-organized several caravans to member’s homes and local nurseries in order to have our members observe the growing techniques of their colleagues.
In addition, Renate played a major role in setting up, providing advice and lending quality plants for POS exhibits, conducted several culture classes over the years, and has generously shared her extensive orchid knowledge with both novice and experienced members of the society. In that regard, Renate has been especially receptive, kind and welcoming when asked about very basic orchid culture questions, particularly when interacting with new members.

Moreover, Renate is an accomplished AOS judge who regularly participates in multiple shows each year and is a top notch orchid hobbyist who has garnered several AOS awards for her beautifully grown plants.

We are extremely fortunate to have Renate as a dedicated and knowledgeable member of our society and we look forward her continued participation in our society activities in the future.

Kentucky Orchid Society
Peg Revell
For over 25 years, the Kentucky Orchid Society has been fortunate to have, and its fortunes have been enriched by, the presence and contributions of its member, Peg Revell. We feel it is our distinct honor to present the Orchid Digest Diamond Award of Excellence to Peg, who has served as our president three times, has produced and edited our newsletter for up to ten years, has been the chair or co-chair of our annual fall orchid show seven times, has been elected secretary of the Society, has presented programs at our meetings numerous times, has been a board member for uncounted years, and has served in more roles, actually, than she can remember. Always—and I mean always—crediting other people rather than herself for any accomplishment or success, even when she has obviously played the primary role, Peg has always been there, whether in the forefront or in the background. She freely shares her deep knowledge of orchids, of our institutional history, and of her contacts throughout the Ohio Valley region, whether in Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, or Missouri. Locally, regionally, and nationally, she can refer you to private or commercial specialists in specific genera, or for specific supplies, or suggestions for excellent speakers for our programs. Through all of her interactions, Peg epitomizes how shared knowledge and active participation create a strong community. We all are thankful that sometime back in the 1980s she just happened to see an announcement in the Louisville Courier-Journal that a KOS meeting was coming up, and all were invited. She thought it sounded interesting, and fun. Well, she has been having fun and making things interesting ever since, and we have benefited from her friendship, her generosity, and from the continuing dedication of this indefatigable orchidist.

New Hampshire Orchid Society
Jean Hallstone
The New Hampshire Orchid Society proudly presented the Orchid Digest Diamond Award of Excellence to Jean Hallstone during our annual show. Jean became a member in 2003 and was elected to the Board of Directors. Jean served admirably as Secretary and was indispensable to our President. While managing secretarial duties she also handled treasurers’ position after treasurer departed society. Jean would be a perfect historian, if we had that position. She is detail oriented, thrives on time lines, schedules and job descriptions. Jean has represented our society during the holidays by decorating with orchids the Friends of New Hampshire Symphony House and sending postcards to promote our annual show. Jean has been Show Chair for the past five years.

This not to overlook the help he brings to our monthly meetings, yearly auction, and the beautiful plants he brings to show at the meetings. He has also been known to share divisions of some of his plants for members to take home grow and enjoy. David lends a welcome smile to our meetings and we want to let him know we appreciate him.

and energetic member of our society since 1999. He served as President in 2005, and on the Board of Directors in 2003, 2006, and 2007. He also conducts potting demonstrations at our local Green Thumb Nursery. which has grown in popularity from one annually to three or more. Charlie has a landscaping business where he incorporates orchids, and bromeliads with evergreens, flowers and trees. This results in a spectacular landscape display which we all enjoy and learn from. In addition to these activities, he finds time to help other members in need with potting,
watering and fertilizing their orchids and bromeliads.

Charlie’s dream is to own a restaurant with an orchid garden. We wish him success in this venture. It is our pleasure to thank Charlie for his service and present the Orchid Digest Diamond Award of Excellence to a most deserving, charismatic, and energetic member of our society.

Ottawa Orchid Society
David Cooper
The Ottawa Orchid Society is honoured to present the Orchid Digest Diamond Award of Excellence to David Cooper, a tireless supporter and volunteer of the Ottawa Society. Dave is a long time member of the Ottawa Society and has served as Vice President and President, and has been a continuous member of the Board since 1995. He was our original web master, both designing the site, updating it, and keeping the site active and current. But his biggest contribution has been as show chairman of the Society’s annual show for over 16 years. This has included both organizing and executing the show as
well as developing the exhibit plan for every show since 1998. If the Society wants something big done well, then David Cooper is the obvious choice. We have benefited from David’s superb photography of orchids, for which he has won prizes, and for his presentations on educational themes such as orchids of Italy and the AOS award system which was also generously loaned to many orchid societies in Eastern Canada as a teaching tool. David is a great organizer, leader, designer, photographer, and thinker and we are fortunate to have him as a very active member of our Society. It is a pleasure to present the Orchid Digest Diamond Award of Excellence to David Cooper.

information to compile an outstanding newsletter during that period. She’s given many presentations on assorted topics to inspire our members and promote education. Tish has prepared our show schedule and printed materials for the show. When we switched to electronic registration, she would take home the entries and print them late at night
to return them for judging by 7AM. We want Tish to know that all of her efforts have not gone unnoticed. We appreciate all of the volunteer hours she has put in for the club. Her orchid knowledge and experience has helped our membership for years. Tish is the current HODOS historian.

Richard has been an orchid grower for many years. He has exceptional knowledge about the plants, and likes to share his knowledge with our members. He discusses the culture and care of the beautiful orchids brought in by our members and blooming on our plant table at each meeting. One significant contribution that he has continuously made since 1990, is a column in the monthly newsletter called “Ask Bill.” This allows society members to write him questions about any aspect of growing orchids or their botany, and he will do his best to give them an answer to the question. He has provided invaluable information to the society in his writing and has helped many members solve their problems and become better orchid growers. Having established good working relationships with other societies, he has represented us at New England orchid shows for many years. Generous, hardworking, and super-reliable, he has held every position on the Board of Directors. As president, he established and updated policies that stand to this day. He stepped up to fill the position of secretary and treasurer when no one else would. For more than seven years, Chuck has been the backbone of our annual show as Vendor/Exhibitor Liaison. Finding the right balance of plants to satisfy both the hobbyist and expert growers, he has also brought in non-plant vendors of items such as jewelry, pottery, and textiles to round-our and expand the appeal of our show.
He graces our monthly show table with his beautiful plants, many of them large and showy cattleyas and cymbidiums. Thank you, Chuck, for your many contributions to the New Hampshire Orchid Society.

Bert does “Plant Sitting” for members who are traveling, helps new and old members with culture. Bert is a long time quiet pillar of support within NHOS who deserves recognition. Karen Breaux
The Terrebone Orchid Society is proud to present the Orchid Digest Diamond Award of Excellence to Karen Breaux. Karen is a charter member of TOS. She has taken on many responsibilities for her society. Several times Karen has held every office and worked even harder as Show Chair. If you needed to have information on AOS, ODC, SWROGA, or TOS, she could get it for you. This was not always easy for her. She has a medical condition that knocks her for a loop every once in a while, leaving her weak and unable to speak. Due to work, Karen and her husband Jerry moved and had to dispose of most of her collection. They maintained their membership and made meetings when they came down for a visit. Karen and Jerry moved back to Houma and again Karen became one of our most active members. Karen worked hard at fund raisers, setting up exhibits, helping to paint and getting show signs out as well as anything else that came up. Karen has put a lot of herself and time into Terrebone Orchid Society. Thank you, Karen.

Joann Green and June Brooks
This year the South Bay Orchid Society is pleased and honored to award the Orchid Digest Award of Excellence to two hard working, deserving members who have served the society since 2006. Joann Green and June Brooks have been our loyal “refreshment ladies” for every single monthly meeting, annual shows, special gatherings, and holiday potlucks. They are usually the first two members to arrive and the last to leave our meetings. They set up all the beverages and other delectable goodies brought in by various members. Joann and June, on certain occasions, have filled in at our raffle sales table and assisted in other positions when the need arose. We have often been praised by the vendors at our shows for the quality and quantity of food we serve, and that’s mainly due to the diligent work of our two lucky winners. They certainly make our society proud and we are honored to have Joann and June as members and want to congratulate them on an award well earned.

Many words have been used to describe her over the years in the orchid world—most of them cannot be mentioned in public—and these are what her friends have said about her! Here are some of the words we in the society use to describe her—she is entertaining, an expert on orchids and all things horticultural or cultural, she embodies the spice of life and very often the life of any party or gathering where she happens to be, above all she is a dear friend. Patti has given numerous informative talks of a variety of topics over the years to our society. Susquehanna Orchid Society
Sam Graci
The Susquehanna Orchid Society is proud to present the  Orchid Digest Diamond Award of Excellence to Sam Graci for his years of service as our Away Show Chairperson.  Despite health issues that would have most people stepping down from a position like Away Show Chairperson, that requires long days, frequently long drives, not knowing what plants you will have to work with, or how much help you will have, Sam served in that position for over seven years.  He was the face of our society to the rest of the orchid world.  Because of Sam’s dedication to ensuring that the Susquehanna Orchid Society had a display in the shows of our sister societies, we have benefitted from the spirit of reciprocity that had other societies display in our shows, thus helping to ensure our success. For his years of hard work and dedication, we are pleased to present Sam with this token of our sincere appreciation.

They have presided over the monthly display table and imparted many words of wisdom to experienced and novice growers alike. They have taught classes on Growing Orchids In Calgary and surrounding area. They are both members of the Society Executive Committee and they have been published in “Orchids “magazine. Catawba Valley Orchid Society
Peggy Ross
This year’s recipient of the  Orchid Digest Diamond Award of Excellence is one of the Catawba Valley Orchid Society’s Charter members, who has been a contributing supporter of this Society since its inception.
Peggy Ross gives of her time and resources.  Whenever the Society has an event and members are asked to contribute time, we will usually find Peggy in attendance. Whenever plants, pots, or other items are needed for a function, she loans whatever she has; she will make resources available for the use of the Society. When asked to serve in any capacity connected to Catawba Valley Orchid Society, Peggy has answered in the affirmative.
The 2012  Orchid Digest Diamond Award Recipient is the voice of reason amid our excitement and sometimes, chaotic, discussions. “To the point,” “pragmatic,” “strong” and “calming” are phrases which come to mind when describing her.  We suspect that Peggy’s approach to the Catawba Valley Orchid Society is quite similar to her approach to life events.

Cattleya trianaei was the favorite. Ole joined our society in 2006 and became very active. He obtains, for our raffle table, orchids and green plants that are donated by several hotels/casinos. This is our major fund raising project. Ole has worked hard with profound determination to make GLVOS a great success and we thank him for his contributions.

Alamo Orchid Society
Wayne Marine
We have a bumper sticker here in Texas that says: "I may not have been born in Texas, but I got here as soon as I could." Well, this member was not a founding member of the Alamo Society, but he joined as soon as he could.
Working quietly, dependably, and without any fanfare, Wayne has become the orchid ambassador in San Antonio and throughout the Texas Hill Country. He believes that knowledge not shared is knowledge lost. This must explain why he makes numerous presentations to garden clubs, mentors those new to orchids, and educates society members and student judges with "show and tells." Wayne regularly brings an assortment of interesting and unusual orchids to these gatherings, where he shares his knowledge about their backgrounds and experience with their culture.
Wayne is incredibly generous with his time in pursuit of all things orchids. He has repeatedly served as President or Vice President and has chaired our local show numerous times. Wayne is an AOS judge, served as Alamo Judging Center chair for five years, and continues to serve as training coordinator for our Center. In his spare time, he curates the orchid collection at the San Antonio Botanical Garden. He is the go-to-guy in the local orchid community and a real asset to the Alamo Orchid Society.
The Alamo Orchid Society is pleased and proud to honor Wayne Marine and his orchid career built on education, generosity, and service with the  Orchid Digest Diamond Award of Excellence.

Ed Cott
The Windsor Orchid Society is honored to present the Ochid Digest Diamond Award of Excellence to our very deserving and most indispensable member Ed Cott. Ed has never failed in 25 years to serve the orchid society diligently and without stint, contributing immensely to its advancement and achievements. Of the three original founding members, Ed is the only remaining founder (1984) and still a society member. He has honourably held most Executive positions (he is again our president), has chaired a great many committees (Budget, Program, Membership, to underline a few), has spearheaded Show participation, special events, fundraisers, again to name only some projects. An active and successful orchid grower, an informed speaker, Ed is now also an AOS Student Judge (Ann Arbor MI). With this prestigious award, the Windsor Orchid Society would like to recognize Ed's past and continued performance to the orchid society.

Maine Orchid Society
Jim and Marie Vollkommer
The Maine Orchid Society was proud to be able to present the  Orchid Digest Diamond Award of Excellence to Jim and Marie Vollkommer. They have been members of our society for over 25 years. During their first years as members they took charge of making sure everything was ready for each meeting. They coordinated refreshments, made sure the coffee was ready, and all tables and chairs ready at the beginning and put away at end of each meeting. They also help with our library, auctions, and social affairs. They have become the backbone of our society and help make sure every meeting runs smoothly. Thank you Jim and Marie.

New Hampshire Orchid Society
Ulla Jurrissen
New Hampshire Orchid Society is honored to present the 2012 Orchid Digest Diamond Award of Excellence to Ulla Jurrissen. Ulla has been a member of NHOS for more than 25 years. Besides serving on the board in many positions including President, she has been an avid supporter and contributor to the success of 20 annual orchid shows. Ulla's special touch has positively impacted every project or interest of NHOS, including our library collection, plant auctions and speaker programs. Our society recognized Ulla as an excellent orchid grower by giving her the Dick Valentine Hobbyist Award. In addition, her orchids have won awards at orchid shows throughout New England, including two AOS awards. Longtime proprietors of Kelley's Korner Orchid Supplies, Ulla and her husband Jan turned over the reins to new owners last year. This is greatly appreciated by members who are unable to attend. Russ will continue on as our newsletter editor. We appreciate his continued hard work and dedication.

Michigan Orchid Society
Ed & Marge Laski
The Michigan Orchid Society is pleased to present the Orchid Digest Diamond Award in recognition of years of dedicated service to the Society by the Laski Family — Marge, Ed, and son, David. The Laskis joined the Society in the late 1970s. David was still in elementary school when they came to their first meetings. They quickly won recognition for their contributions to the Society though numerous volunteer hours, multiple orchid show setups and teardowns plus all the small, necessary jobs that keep a Society strong. They were awarded the Society’s highest honor - Orchidist of the Year in 1980. They were just getting started. Marge has held numerous positions on the Board including Trustee and President (2009-2011). Here her quiet manner, ready smile, and sense of delight in orchids and fellow orchidists served her and the Society well. Ed has always been available to help with the physical demands of the Society - be it hanging backdrops to rearranging the storage shed. He has done this year after year for last thirty plus years. Together they and David shared a particular fascination with Lady Slipper orchids and Orchid Heisey pattern glassware, culminating in a trophy winning display at the Society’s Palm Sunday Show. They have been the Society “go to people” for help and volunteer time and have always answered, “yes” when asked. For these gifts to the Society, we are delighted to recognize them with this well deserved “Diamond Award” and a hearty “Thank You.”

Greater Philadelphia Orchid Society
Lois and Jim Duffin
Quite simply put, without Lois Duffin and the unending assistance of her husband Jim, there simply would not be a Greater Philadelphia Orchid Society. Lois Duffin had been President of the Greater Philadelphia Orchid Society longer than anyone can really remember though records seems to go back into the 1970’s. Now that she has retired from that position, the members wish to honor her service for these many years with the prestigious Orchid Digest Diamond Award.
Through the years, Lois not only oversaw the meetings but arranged speakers, promoted Show Table, organized auctions and other fund-raisers. Through her leadership, the society remained a viable organization through good times and bad. Her husband, Jim, always by her side is her constant assistant and associate. This award is but a small token of our appreciation for the unselfish contributions they have made for decades to the society. They continue to serve as Directors on the Board and participants on the Show Table. Our sincere thanks to Lois and Jim from the Officers, Board of Directors and Members of the Greater Philadelphia Orchid Society.

Ottawa Orchid Society

He has brought our Society to the public's attention through his media contacts in television and radio. Marcel has coordinated the American Orchid Society (AOS) judging of the Society's annual show for the past 25 plus years and helps at our monthly Society meetings with hospitality and making new members feel welcome. Marcel continues to serve as the go-to-person with members who have questions about orchids or who need help setting up displays at orchid shows. He continues to grow orchids and wins numerous awards for his personal displays. He served for nearly a decade as its Auction Chair starting in the mid-1990s and then for years later provided year-round care for the orchid orphans collected for the auction. Cyrus has held several elected offices, serving first as Treasurer, then as Vice President, and finally as President from 2000 to 2002. Being both knowledgeable and approachable, Cyrus has taught many members over the years about orchids and their culture. The MOS is very appreciative of Cyrus’ contributions and looks forward to his continued good work.

Catawba Valley Orchid Society
Vera Arndt
The Catawba Valley Orchid Society recognizes that its members contribute in many different, invaluable ways. Throughout the years, CVOS has called upon members to support fund raisers by contributing items for our silent auctions, and to donate plants for our Grower’s Day activities.
Always participating in these efforts, Vera Arndt has shared from her home and gardens. These plants now grace many gardens of CVOS members, as well as people who have made purchases during
our annual Grower’s Day sales. In sharing of her gardens, this member has indeed shared of herself.
Through faithful participation, attendance,
and contributions of time and activity, Vera has unceasingly supported the CVOS. For these reasons, and many more unwritten, the Orchid Digest Diamond Award of 2011 is given to Vera Arndt.

Brazos Valley Orchid Society
Betty & Jim Ed Hoke
The Orchid Digest Diamond Award of Excellence was presented to Betty and Jim Ed Hoke on December 4, 2011 at the Rosewood Bread & Breakfast Christmas Party for the Brazos Valley Orchid Society. Betty and Jim Ed have been loyal supporters of the Society for years and continue to attend many meetings. Betty is the Secretary and was instrumental in designing and procuring our Brazos Valley Orchid Society pins and pendants. Jim Ed and Betty are avid orchid growers and frequently enter their orchids in the "Show and Tell" part of the monthly meeting. They also give back to the Society by donating plants and other orchid items to the Society. The fact they live in another county and drive an hour each way to meetings is indicative of their strong dedication and love of orchids.

Orchid Growers' Guild, Madison, Wisconsin
Chuck Acker
The Orchid Growers' Guild (OGG) is honored to present the 2012 Orchid Digest Diamond Award of Excellence to Chuck Akers. He was one of the original founders of OGG when it was established in late 1985. As a charter member, he served as the First Vice President. Over the last 26 years he has supported the guild in many ways. Chuck has been employed in the orchid nursery business for much of his life; first with his father's business, Orchids by the Ackers, to his present position at Orchids Garden Centre and Nursery. During all these years he has actively encouraged and educated his customers in orchid culture and the benefits of joining Orchid Growers Guild. Chuck has been a regular presenter at the Guild's November meeting. The November meeting was the start of "Chuck's Challenge," when guild members receive a seedling. The goal is to nurture the seedling in the next year so as to become the "winner" of Chuck's predetermined requirements. Winners receive a gift certificate to use at the nursery.
Chuck has ensured that the Guild is allowed to use the greenhouse as the drop-off/pick-up point for our away shows. He has helped us fill in the OGG away show exhibits with orchids when we run low on plants. In addition, he has opened the greenhouse late on Sunday evenings when we return with show plants.
In recent years, he has sponsored the Cypripedium Alliance (Best of Classes 40 through 43) award at Orchid Quest, the Guild's annual show. Most recently, he has become involved in some of our pre-show activities including speaking on the Larry Meiller "Garden Talk" show. Chuck has been one of the biggest supporters of the Guild since its founding. Chuck does it because he loves orchids and wants to help all those that share his interest. We all appreciate the help and education that he has given each of us when it comes to orchids. We want to give Chuck long overdue recognition.

A former POS Member of the Year in 2010, Sandi has demonstrated herself to be a tireless contributor to the POS, always stepping up to assist in numerous activities including opening the facilities for meetings, handling sign-up sheets, introducing guests and new members, assisting the President on member notifications, bringing in plants for exhibit, planning and participating in POS fund raising projects. Tidewater Orchid Society
Dave and Joanne Bryan
The Tidewater Orchid Society (TOS) is extremely proud to present the Orchid Digest Diamond Award of Excellence to Dave and Joanne Bryan. Both Dave and Joanne have been a powerful force in TOS activities for over 30 years. Joanne and Dave have each been President of TOS, and between them have held every elected position in the Society's leadership as well as chairing multiple committees over the years.
Dave and Joanne took the leadership role in organizing the 45th Eastern Orchid Congress (EOC) and AOS Trustees Meeting in Williamsburg, Virginia in 2000. They began organizing this event in 1996 bringing TOS, The Peninsula Orchid Society (POS) and the Virginia Orchid Society (VOS) together to host this event. The event was extremely successful and was one of the largest and best attended EOC events held. Unfortunately, this turned out to be the last EOC, and the Congress was disbanded in 2003. In an effort to host an event in the southeast, they formed a committee with TOS, POS, and
VOS in 2005 to plan a one day Orchid Symposium and asked Merritt Huntington to advise them. Unfortunately Merritt died unexpectedly and the committee decided to hold the event in honor of Meritt because of his extensive involvement with the AOS and the orchid community in general—including his position as auctioneer at our annual orchid auction. The first Merritt Huntington Memorial Symposium was held November 2005 and Dave and Joanne have continued to preside over the Symposium every year. The programming included the AOS Trustees Meeting in conjunction with the 6th Symposium in October, 2010. In addition they have brought in the newly formed Richmond Orchid Alliance to partner in this event.
Dave and Joanne have consistently offered to host committee, executive and board meeting in their home and, despite having to take personal time from their jobs, have assisted in putting many TOS orchid displays in shows held in Virginia, North Carolina and Maryland while putting in their own displays in the local TOS shows. Their dedication to expanding the world of orchids for the public and the hobbyist is greatly appreciated by the orchid community.

Sacramento and North Valley Orchid Societies
Dick and Donna Murrill
The Sacramento and North Valley Orchid Societies would like to jointly nominate Dick and Donna Murrill for the Orchid Digest Diamond Award of Excellence.  We join forces to honor Dick and Donna with the Diamond Award.  For decades the Murrills have been active members of the Sacramento Society and were founding members of the North Valley Society in Chico, California.  We honor them for their enormous generosity of spirit!  Whether it is serving as officers, designing or providing plants for garden displays or individual plants in shows, the Murrills have helped to educate generations of orchid growers in California's Central Valley.  They have done scores of presentations for newcomers and experienced growers alike on topics like orchid pests and diseases, garden design, and growing vandaceous orchids.  Their hospitality at greenhouse open houses is legendary (as are Donna's chocolate chip cookies!!). Their service to both societies serves as a model for our members.

Greater Lansing Orchid Society
Dot Potter Barnett
This year's Orchid Digest Diamond Award of Excellence goes to a member who has demonstrated excellence in preparing the most important communication tool for our organization, our newsletter, the Calypso. Dot Barnett produces our newsletter every two months. The Calypso tells us who did what, what's being planned next month and beyond, what happened last month, whose orchid won a trophy, etc. Dot keeps us on track in submitting material for each newsletter, which is no easy task. Not every member can attend every meeting or event. But with Dot's help, they still know what's going on with GLOS.
But Dot has made the Calypso more than just a newsletter; it is something we can show off and be proud of. Our newsletter is more than just a series of articles. It is a story of what we are doing as a society. Dot organizes the articles to begin the story and then adds wonderfully composed and edited pictures that help complete the story.
The Calypso is the glue that binds us together. Thanks Dot, for your on-going work as Newsletter Editor and in making the Calypso something of which we are all proud.

San Diego County Orchid Society
David Brown
The San Diego County Orchid Society is extremely honored to bestow the Orchid Digest Diamond Award of Excellence to David Brown. Dave has been our tireless President for three years. During this time, Dave took on numerous other jobs, including the incredibly difficult and time consuming job of co-chair and chair person of our three shows in Balboa Park. Dave played a major role in transforming these (small shows) to something approaching our major show including vendors and a totally new and different show venue, as well as picking up and returning the necessary props for the shows. Dave also set up, with help, the preparations for our two annual pot luck dinners.
Dave was instrumental in moving the monthly AOS Encinitas Judging Center from the San Diego Botanical Garden to meet in conjunction with our society in Balboa Park. The AOS judging is just across the patio, prior to our 7:30 pm meeting. This move enables more participation by the membership, as the prior location was 20 miles away. If this is not enough, Dave is the representative for the San Diego Orchid Society to the San Diego Botanical Park Foundation, the umbrella organization for all societies that meet in Balboa Park. Last but not least, Dave helps with the orchid collection at the San Diego Zoo. Dave is a real asset to the San Diego Orchid Society. Thanks Dave, you certainly deserve this special award.

Owner of Fishing Creek Orchids just north of Harrisburg, PA, his amazing talents as an orchid grower have earned him over 100 awards from the American Orchid Society. Over the years he has served the society in many capacities, from President to Board Member, but perhaps most uniquely by regularly bringing an assortment of well-flowered interesting and unusual orchids to our meetings, where he freely shares his experience of their culture. Steve always has time to share his knowledge with anyone interested in learning about this love of his, and he has a wonderful knack of being able to target his audience and talk to their level. He seems to always find time to give guidance to those of us just learning about this obsession. Susquehanna Orchid Society is proud to award the Orchid Digest Diamond Award of Excellence to Steve Male and cannot thank him enough for all he has done and continues to do. His membership in our group has benefited all of us over the decades.
